There has never been a greater time for seizing opportunities than right now.
As female entrepreneurs the doors have swung wide open for us to come marching in – creating businesses and designing lives for ourselves that are foremothers only dreamed of.
Opportunities are abundant but you cannot just wait for them.
You need to take an active role in being prepared and creating the opportunities you desire.
Here are 6 tips to get started:
1 | Be prepared. Be ready
Often people attribute someone’s success to mere luck. Oh please! They’re prepared and they’re looking for it. Luck arrives when the aware person seizes the opportunity that presents itself . Be prepared and pay attention to your environment so that you can create a bit of your own luck.
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” ― Seneca
2 | Be open to opportunities in disguise
Opportunities can come in different shapes and sizes and can often be heavily disguised. They also may be smaller and quieter than you had expected. Opportunities can be a chance meeting at a coffee shop or chatting with someone at your kid’s soccer match. Opportunities can arise from reading an article in your favorite magazine or writing a small piece for your local paper.
“Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.” ― Demosthenes
3 | Listen to Deepak
In his book Seven Spiritual Laws of Success Deepak Chopra notes that with every perceived setback or failure there is a “seed of opportunity”.
One brilliant and life changing idea might be in the ashes of a big disappointment… if you look for it.
We often get hung up on the setback itself and close ourselves off from taking a different view. You just have to look for that opportunity during those times and seize the different opportunities that are now available.
“All problems contain the seeds of opportunity, and this awareness allows you to take the moment and transform it to a better situation or thing.” ― Deepak Chopra
4 | Do the work
People underestimate the value of hard work. I’m not talking about hard work for the sake of hard work, I’m talking about simply the work that goes into creating something amazing.
You can do the work in a mere 20 hours a week while raising a family but you’re still doing the work (others won’t do!) necessary to be ready for any and every opportunity.
“We often miss opportunity because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work” ― Thomas A. Edison
5 | Create your own opportunities
Get out there and meet people. Make calls. Send emails. Ask for introductions and guidance. You cannot wait for opportunities to find you. Step outside your comfort zone and create a field for opportunities to bloom.
“A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.” ― Francis Bacon
6 | Stay positive
Creating opportunities may take a bit of time and you may have some failed attempts, but you must remain positive. Only by keeping an open and optimistic outlook will you be able to watch those seeds grow and your life change.
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ― Winston S. Churchill
Opportunities are everywhere. It’s your job to be ready, open, and flexible while at the same time creating and seizing them as you find them!
