What is Triggering You Lately?

Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. – Carl Jung

What is triggering you lately?

Do you find that you are swirling in a stream of crankiness and down right vitriol over something you’ve read, seen, heard or experienced? I’m not talking our political climate (and the news) – that’s obvious.

I’m talking about an email you read from someone.

A blog post you stumbled across.

Someone elses sales copy.

What is being triggered… in you?

Do you ever stop yourself – in the middle of a rant – to figure out what’s going on?

Why is this person or situation causing you to become so emotive?

Asking the question is incredibly important because so much can be learned. Often what is being triggered can be (not always) something in you.

A reflection of sorts.

I think this happens a lot in the online world because we have such easy access to everyone’s stuff. You wonder what your competitor is doing… and voila! A few quick key strokes and you know exactly what they’re up to and sometimes even how much they’re making.

Or, the person you’d been admiring shows up in your inbox with the exact idea you’ve been tossing around in your head for years but have yet to create.

Are they doing something you know YOU could be doing?

Did they “take” (not steal… because there are no new ideas under the sun… seriously!) your idea and run with it while you’ve sitting on it, waiting for the perfect moment or spinning in indecision.

I’ve seen some truly awful (ego-based) gripes and conversations online around someone having “stolen” their idea or “copied” their process. When you look closely you see they shared the same influences, the same education/training, and maybe even had the same mentors. However even if the general idea is similar, how the idea is executed is totally different.

(That ego-based “she’s out to get me” or “that’s MY idea” isn’t productive in the least! Again, search inward to see what’s really going on.)

A lot can be uncovered and discovered about yourself when you take a thoughtful pause and reflect why you’re so worked up.

  1. What exactly about this situation is creating an emotional experience?

  2. What qualities in this person am I reacting to (good and bad)?

  3. Why haven’t I realized that dream, idea, project, business yet?

  4. What’s been holding me back?

Know that even if someone has literally run with the exact idea you have had that there is no way you would create a duplicate of it. You are unique in your perspective, your experience, and your language. What you create has its rightful place.

But first you have to get it out there.

So don’t give up just because a similar idea has been put forth. Uncover why you’re being triggered, what’s holding you back from doing more and then create a plan to make it happen.
