Are You Ready to Mastermind?

I sometimes miss the days of stopping my a coworkers desk and shooting the s*** or sneaking out for a 3pm coffee with a work pal.

Those connections were my absolute favorite part of working for someone else. The friendships I made in my traditional jobs I maintain to this day even though I haven’t worked for someone else in over 10 years. (Wait, hold on, have to do the math – yep, 10 years! Wow )

When I started my own business I felt like something was dramatically missing.

I loved the freedom of designing my day, taking power naps at 2pm, working when I was most energized and doing all the creative stuff that comes with starting a business.

However, I desperately missed the camaraderie.  I missed my peeps.  I missed gabbing over coffee, lunch or happy hour drinks. I missed sharing the ups and downs with people doing similar work or at least working for a similar company.

When I discovered the concept of “Masterminds” and that I could create circles of business friends who could not only provide the emotional and practical support but could potentially further each other’s businesses, I looked around as to where I could sign up.

And that’s when the breaks squealed to a halt.

I did a Google search. Nothing.
I asked around. Nothing.
I went to networking events and groups hoping to feel that deep sense of community. Nothing.

So I created my own.

And we’ve been going strong for years.

I feel lucky but I know that it isn’t always easy to create or find a group of women who are like-minded enough to support the process, to collaborate openly and genuinely, and to be nonjudgmental and open.

Do you feel ready to create or join a Mastermind Circle.  

Here are some signs to watch out for:

• You realize that working in isolation is slowing you down.
• You spend way too much time spinning in circles or stuck on seemingly basic business stuff.
• You feel a low level of depression (or anxiety) about your business.
• You wish you could get some of your everyday questions answered regularly.
• You are envious when you see groups of women chatting together over coffee and talking about business.
• You know the power of multiple minds on a single problem is invaluable.
• Basics or complex, you just want some advice and guidance on what works and what doesn’t.
• You have no reason to put on makeup, brush your hair or change your clothes for that matter because you can go weeks without ever really seeing (or talking) to anyone.
• You know that you work great as an independent but not totally alone.
• You dream of productive retreats where you sit around on overstuffed couches with other women, sipping tea and planning your big bold business goals.
• You just plain miss connecting with others, sharing the ups and downs and wish you could find a group of people who can support you.

So now what!  You’ve recognized that you’re yearning for connection and community.

Well you can start your own or you can join an existing group.

There are clearly pros and cons to each and many factors to consider.

Starting your own can be pretty easy and straightforward if you have a group of women you can invite and who are willing to commit to weekly calls or meetings.  (Regularity and consistency is super key so weekly or ever other week is the absolute minimum)

Or you can find one in your local community by attending local networking events, asking around, or looking on meetup.com.
