Legos and Business

Cortney is off traveling the world right now (beside all her amazing work with LearnSavvy she also holds down a full time gig – she’s a rock star).

My life couldn’t be more different.  She travels to gorgeous destinations and is mixing and mingling with interesting international people.

I, on the other non-manicured hand, hold down the LearnSavvy fort stateside while also juggling full-time mom duties.  It’s an interesting juxtaposition.  It gives us a great laugh.

I was playing Legos with my little guy yesterday and as we sat together on the floor reading directions, I couldn’t help but think how awesome it would be if business were as simple as following the (visual) directions similar to what Lego provides.

Wouldn’t it be so much easier if you did: Step 1. Step 2. Snap this. Snap that. And voilà , you’re done!

As our good friend constantly reminds us, “If starting a business were sooooo easy, everyone would be doing it.”

“If starting a business were sooooo easy, everyone would be doing it.”

Even though it feels like some days everyone IS launching a business – the fact is that we run in very special circles and no, not everyone and her sister is starting a business.

That’s with good reason. Launching a business takes work, commitment and perseverance and a whole other host of fancy descriptives.

If business were as easy as following Lego instructions, the fun of discovery and self-exploration would be lost.

I think of all those older kids (and some adults) who take a ton of Legos and create whole cities and landscapes – drawing on their massive creativity and imagination.

As entrepreneurs, we’re more like them.

We may have followed a few directions here and there to learn the very basics but the vastness of our business only comes from building something new out of simple seemingly unrelated parts.

It comes down to drawing on our creativity, imagination and passion.

If it were so easy everyone would be doing it!  Yes, exactly.

When you have those days that feel heavy and impossible.

When you want to throw in the towel and get a job at Starbucks (hell, at least there’s free coffee, right?), know that if business were as easy as a simple box of Legos – it just wouldn’t be the same adventure.  You wouldn’t get as much out of the journey.

I’m not saying it has to be torture and maybe most days it does feel easy, but we all run into times that just plain suck.  However we soldier on.

That’s just what we do!

Stay the course, my friend, and keep going (just watch out for those stray Lego pieces on the floor – ouch!)
