The holidays are fast approaching and the cheer is beginning to be felt – and beginning to get quite distracting.
As a business owner, we often begin to wind down the year prematurely or just throw up our hands and say “I’ll wait until the first week of January to do that”.
Don’t waste these precious weeks. There are some fun and meaningful things you can do right now.
Last week we shared what you can do to wrap up 2015 in a powerful way to make space for the New Year. Read it here.
This week we’re going to share 6 things you can do right now to prepare for memorable 2016.
1. Get a Mentor
Is there someone you admire that is in your community? Do you have your eyes set on someone you know you could learn from? Make a thoughtful plan to get to know them deeper in the coming year. Do not simply reach out and ask if they’d mentor you (ick!) but begin to find ways to help them out and then work on deepening the connection. You could send them an article or resource you’d think they’d find interesting, offer to make an introduction, retweet their articles, or comment on their blog. Be generous and build a real relationship. Who knows where it might take you.
Action Step: Identify the person you’d love to have as a mentor. What one thing can you do to help them and schedule to do it in January.
2. Get Re-acquainted With Your Why
If you don’t know you’re big Why, this is the perfect time to get super clear. Sometimes your why might change a bit over time but sit down and touch back in with it so that it is a clear force in everything you do in 2016
Action Step: Write down your big, audacious, life-affirming WHY and post it where you see it daily.
3. Find Your Posse
If you’re going it alone, 2016 is the year to recruit your posse. This may mean planning to attend more networking events, mixers, workshops or conferences but if you’re able to find more people to travel this crazy journey with, the time spent will be worth it.
Action Step: Select one networking event that you will attend monthly or one exciting conference to attend in Q1. Put it on your calendar now.
4. Focus on 1 Thing
Figure out the 1 thing and then make plans to accomplish it the first 90 days of 2016.
This awesome concept was inspired by a conversation I had this week with Marianne Emma Jeff of Get it Done Diva. She and I talked about really becoming clear on that 1 thing that will move your business forward and then spending the next 90 days focused on getting it done. Is there one big project that you know will drive revenue or move your business significantly forward?
Action Step: Determine what that 1 thing will be. Schedule a date with yourself for the first week in January to map out how you will go after that goal within the first 90 days of 2016.
5. Really Know How You Want to Feel
If planning seems dry and boring focus on how you want to feel. You can derive a serious plan from that launching point. Once you discover how you want to truly feel each and every day, making decisions and plans becomes a whole lot easier. Inspired by Danielle Laporte’s book Desire Map.
Action Step: Sit down and really figure out the 2-4 emotions you’d like to feel every day next year. Write them down on a piece of paper and post somewhere you’ll see it often.
6. Start that One Self-Care Ritual
We all have that one self-care ritual that we’ve done in the past, or promised yourself you’d start doing frequently or simply dream about incorporating into your life. There is no time like now to get started. Don’t let another year pass you by. It can be anything from meditating daily, to monthly massages to scheduled coffee dates with your best friend.
Action Step: Determine that one self-care ritual that you want to book into your calendar regularly and then open your calendar and schedule it for January (and beyond!!).
At the end of 2016 what do you want to look back on and be most proud of. Perhaps it’s the completion of a project, a launch of a new product or service, the number of people you have served or how much more confident you’ve become.
Don’t let another year pass without intentionally creating the life you desire. All it takes is some thoughtful planning and a commitment to yourself.
We can’t wait to hear everything you’ve accomplished!
