Overcoming Resistance in Your Business

Resistance is a funny thing.

It’s also wicked if you ignore it and don’t draw it out of the shadows.

Resistance shows up when we reject immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth.
This is the simple and perfect definition by Steven Pressfield in his book, “The War of Art” (a must read!).

Resistance shows up:

  • When we push ourselves outside our comfort zone
  • When we want to learn something new
  • When we decide to finally leave our stale job
  • When we yearn to start our own venture
  • The moment we are about to hit ‘send’
  • When we sit down to write a blog post
  • When we are launching our new product/service
  • The minute you agree to say “Yes” to public speaking
  • And the moments leading up to stepping out on stage
  • Anytime we want to get rid of an old habit
  • Every time we want to start a new habit

Don't let resistance and the Fear of Stepping outside your comfort zone stop you from taking the leap!

1st Step – Identify Your Resistance

What areas of your business (and your life) are you most resisting? Look at:

The things you put off
The tasks that show up on your to-do list that you keep ignoring
The accounting you don’t make time for
The resolutions you make every year (or every quarter)
The business plan you’ve been “meaning” to write
The phone call you keep wanting to schedule
The meeting you’ve postponed
The big bold product that’s finished but just isn’t quite perfect
The “crazy” idea you want to run past your tribe

2nd Step – Ask yourself WHY you’re resisting

Sit quietly with this question and see what bubbles up.  Is it that you want to go in a different direction?  Is it that your heart is no longer in it?  Is it because you’re afraid of what others might say?  Really get curious and dig deep.

The Antidote

Pressfield notes that the antidote to Resistance is becoming a Pro.  Pro vs Amateur.

The Amateur has a million excuses, spends years trying to overcome fear before stepping into the ring and waits for inspiration to strike.

The Pro is disciplined, consistence and puts in the work.  She still has fears but she steps into the spotlight anyway.  She doesn’t take failure or criticism personally.  She shows up – each and every day whether she feels like it or not!

When we act like a Pro – resistance doesn’t stand a chance.  There is no place for it.

So how can you turn Pro?  Take a look at your list of resistance items and ask yourself, “What would a Pro do?”  What would the savvy CEO of a company do?  And go do it!

Share below how it goes.  Can’t wait to hear how Pro you’re becoming.
