When you’re finally able to open up your windows and let the sounds and smells of Spring bellow into your home, you often find you’re ready to do a bit of cleaning.
Spring is a sign of renewal … of growth… of letting go of the layers that have been building up over the long, cold Winter season. (Yes, those “layers” too).
We often think solely of Spring cleaning our homes but this is equally a great time to Spring clean your business too. It’s a time to start fresh, to look at your business with new eyes, to begin planting seeds for future harvest.
Here are 4 Simple Steps to Spring Clean Your Business
Step 1. Discard Outdated “Stuff”
In business you’re constantly learning new tools, strategies, and processes. You may have attended workshops, conferences and webinars and in doing so you often collect a lot of junk. Schwag, binders, notebooks of notes… Have you looked at them since? Are they just collecting dust or forcing your shelves to overflow? Go through all of it and toss out what you don’t need and thoughtfully file the rest. File only if you plan to revisit it within the next 6-12 months. If not, then you probably will never return to it so dump it.
Step 2. Discard Outdated Thinking
What mind clutter is holding you back from reaching your biggest goals and dreams? It doesn’t take that much self-awareness and observation to quickly pick up on the mental noise – the constantly replaying negative statements – and the stories you tell yourself. Is it that you’re not smart enough or perky enough? Is it that you aren’t well-connected or tech-savvy? Is it that you just don’t have enough time or resources or energy? What are the statements you say regularly (some may even seem innocuous) that are holding you back? Awareness is the first step – bring them out of Winter hibernation and deal with them in the fresh Spring light.
Step 3. Revisit Your Annual Goals
We are so keen to make goals and plans when the calendar turns to a new year but after writing everything down, we often forget to revisit, revise and account for those initial goals. Don’t set them and forget them. Your goals are living and need to be nurtured, fed and cared for. This is a great time to take a few hours with your annual goals. Q1 is over and Spring feels like a fresh start.
Step 4: Plant Seeds
Similar to gardening Spring is the time to plant your seeds for Summer and Fall harvest. Utilize the energy of the season and plant some business seeds. Are there people that you’ve been wanting to meet or take out to coffee or lunch? Are there projects that you want to get underway? Are there sales calls you’ve been putting off? Is there a big audacious glittery goal that you want to tackle? This is the perfect time to begin planting those seeds.
Check List:
1:
Go through your desk and inbox and throw out any and all papers, documents, bills and junk you no longer need, want or use.
2:
What one recurring mean thought has been plaguing your mind this week? What is it and what steps will you take to eradicate it?
3:
Pull out your annual goals and see where you’re at today. Make any necessary modifications.
4:
What one “seed” can you plant this week? And schedule a time to sow it.
Draw on the freshness of Springtime to make strides both personally and professionally!
